I once coached a girls’ rec sports team where most of the players were committed to other competitive sports. Practice attendance was abysmal, as were game-day results. I frequently wondered if I was wasting my precious time. Still, a small core of young women consistently came to practice and games as we cobbled together barely enough players to avoid forfeiting week after week.
During pre-game warm-up on Father’s Day morning, one of the most committed players cheerfully wished me a happy Father’s Day. “Thanks. That’s kind of you,” I said. She replied matter-of-factly, “Well, I see you more than my dad.”
