Director of Development

Reports to: Executive Director

Location: In office (Charlottesville, Virginia) preferred, remote or hybrid considered for
exceptional candidate

Compensation:

  • Full-time, non-exempt
  • Salary: $90,000-130,000, plus negotiable performance-based bonus
  • Health Reimbursement Account

General Purpose: In the last year, the Institute for Family Studies (IFS) has doubled its
fundraising revenue and seeks to sustain this success. In collaboration with the Executive
Director, the Director of Development will oversee fundraising efforts for IFS.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop a fundraising strategy that:
    • Builds our base of core general operations support
    • Grows our major donor program
    • Sustains our grants program
    • Pursues high-value project-specific opportunities
  • Develop a portfolio of major donors through calls, visits, and other cultivation (includes some travel)
  • Manage up to Executive Director to cultivate highest-value donors and prospects
  • Collaborate with Director of Communications to produce compelling donor messaging, letters, and collateral materials
  • Manage grants program, pursuing opportunities for new and increased funding
  • Develop a plan for development processes, operations, reporting, and team growth

Qualifications:

  • Outstanding verbal and written skills
  • Understanding and passion for marriage, family, and the mission of IFS
  • Strong work ethic
  • Attention to detail and capacity to manage multiple projects at once
  • Deep knowledge of best practices in nonprofit development
  • Ability to develop meaningful relationships with major donors and close transformative gifts
  • A track record of raising significant support for a compelling mission

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 3+ years of relevant experience

Research Associate, Pronatalism Initiative

Reports to: Director of the Pronatalism Initiative

Location: In office (Charlottesville, Virginia) preferred, remote or hybrid considered

Compensation:

  • Full-time, non-exempt
  • Salary: $70,000-95,000

General Purpose: The Institute for Family Studies (IFS) seeks a Research Associate for the
Pronatalism Initiative (P.I.). This role is ideal for someone who likes to tell stories using their
own original data-analysis, who cares deeply about healthy family life and higher birth rates,
and who enjoys keeping up-to-date on demographic literature. The Research Associate will
work closely with the P.I. Director to produce innovative, influential research on our
birthrate crisis.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day of the P.I. research program, ensuring peerless research quality.
  • Analyze survey data and other datasets to identify trends in family dynamics, fertility, and demographics.
  • Assist in coding and data processing using tools like Stata (preferred), R, Python, or similar (intermediate skills sufficient, competence troubleshooting using AI-assistance is valuable).
  • Produce short-form content, such as articles, summaries, and social media updates, with quick turnaround and clear, engaging writing.
  • Support new survey development, including questionnaire design and testing.
  • Collaborate with P.I. Director on major research projects.
  • Organize and coordinate a small portfolio of P.I. events and activities.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated competence in economics, statistics, or a related field, whether through a degree or prior experience
  • Strong interest in working with data, particularly survey data from sources like Census, GSS, or similar
  • Basic coding abilities; no need for advanced expertise, though familiarity with data manipulation and visualization is key
  • Genuine passion for pronatalism and family-strengthening policies
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Good and willing writer

Events and Outreach Coordinator

Reports to: Director of the Family First Technology Initiative

Location: In office (Charlottesville, Virginia)

Compensation:

  • Full-time, non-exempt

About IFS: The mission of the Institute for Family Studies is to strengthen marriage and
family life and advance the welfare of children through research and public education.

General Purpose: IFS seeks an Events and Outreach Coordinator to manage a portfolio of
events and forge strategic partnerships for the Family First Technology Initiative (FFTI) at
IFS. This is a full-time position based in Charlottesville reporting to the Director of FFTI. The
Coordinator will work closely with FFTI’s policy analyst and others, internally and externally,
who collaborate with FFTI. Depending on capacity, the Coordinator will also manage select
events and partnerships for IFS more broadly.
You’ll help to expand the reach of a growing and dynamic Initiative at IFS with both external
partners and key decision makers in state capitals and on Capitol Hill. The work of the
Initiative spans research, public polling, policy education, public and private events, and
media engagement.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Launch a series of new events to support the work of FFTI
  • Manage the weekly Faith, Family and Technology Network calls
  • Work with the Director of FFTI to communicate with organizational partners and build strategic alliances
  • Help launch the pilot Elevating the Church Committee
  • Proactively form relationships with potential strategic partners.
  • Manage events and partnerships for IFS more broadly as capacity permits

Qualifications: IFS welcomes applicants from a range of backgrounds, including think tanks,
academia, policy nonprofits, or mission-driven startups, but the ideal candidate has 3-5 years
of relevant nonprofit events or outreach experience. Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, including events, at one time
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills
  • Alignment with IFS’s right-of-center, pro-family approach to technology
  • A strong belief that problems that arise from technology can be addressed culturally, politically and spiritually
  • Comfort working with ideologically diverse groups and individuals
  • Proven ability to develop and nurture new contacts and form lasting partnerships
  • Detail-oriented and a desire for excellent execution
