U.S. Fertility Rate Falls to Lowest on Record – Again

The U.S. fertility rate fell to its lowest level on record in 2024 with fewer than 1.6 children being born per woman. The new number reflects the continuation of a years-long decline in the fertility rate raising concerns for our nation’s economic and societal future.

According to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 3,628,934 births in the United States in 2024, an increase of 1% from 2023. However, the general fertility rate (number of births per 1,000 females ages 15-44) declined 1% to 53.8 in 2024 from 54.5 in 2023.
