New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a first of its kind bill attempting to protect kids from the harmful effects of social media. The Safe for Kids Act is a first of its kind bill forcing social media companies to restrict addictive algorithms and feeds for anyone under 18. The act will also bar notifications related to the feeds between midnight and 6am without parental consent.
In response, several free speech groups claim the bill will violate the First Amendment by censoring free speech online. Executive Director of the Institute for Family Studies and a native New Yorker, Michael Toscano, joins to share his reaction to this landmark bill. Toscano discusses when the act is set to go into effect and whether he expects a contentious legal battle in the interim. Toscano says this is not really a matter of free speech but instead about business. He explains what he means.
