Vatican, Mar 5, 2026: Artificial intelligence companies are aiming “not to assist workers, but to replace them,” says William Jones of the Future of Life Institute, in a conversation with Vatican News about the present stage of AI development, the effects it is already having on people, and the role religion can play in shaping a hopeful future for humanity.
For several years, AI safety specialists have cautioned about a potential point in the future when AI systems become advanced enough to improve themselves. In such a scenario, these systems could create more capable versions of themselves, which would then continue the cycle of self-enhancement.
