The rich countries of the world are not reproducing themselves. A total fertility rate (TFR) of 2.1 (the number of children the average woman will have in her lifetime) is considered replacement fertility. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the TFR in the United States in 2022 was about 1.67. According to the World Fact Book in 2023, the TFR in Sweden was 1.67, in Germany 1.58, and in Japan 1.39.
